How Much Food to Order for a Party of 10, 20 or 40

Platter of golden falafel with tahini sauce and pickles

Ordering food for a group is mostly guesswork, and nobody wants to run out halfway through a party or be left with three trays of leftovers. Here is a simple way to plan it, using the platters and tubs you can pre-order on our site.

Start with three questions

  • Is it a meal or a snack? Lunch for the office needs about twice the food of an afternoon get-together.
  • Is there anything else on the table? If someone is bringing dessert or a main dish, scale back.
  • Who is coming? A crowd of hungry teenagers eats more than a baby shower. Round up, not down.

Our rules of thumb

  • Dips: about 2 oz of hummus or dip per person with pita. A 16 oz tub covers around 8 people; a 4 lb bulk tub covers around 30.
  • Falafel: 3 pieces each as a starter, 5 or 6 as part of a meal.
  • Salads as a side: about 4 oz per person. A 16 oz tub serves about 4; a bulk tub serves 12 to 16. Two or three different salads look better than one big one.
  • Wraps and sandwiches: 2 halves per person for lunch. Our Wrap and Sandwich Platter is cut into 40 halves, so it feeds about 20.
  • Something sweet: 1 or 2 pieces of baklava each.
